Fayette County Realtors

Our Fayette County real estate agents are specialists in North Austin real estate.

Fayette County was established in 1837 and includes approximately 950 square miles of Central Texas countryside.  Fayette County is located about sixty miles southeast of Austin in the Blackland Prairies Region. This area was part of Stephen F. Austin’s firs settlement along the Colorado River.

The County was named for General LaFayette, a war hero during the American Revolution, and was formed out of parts of Bastrop and Colorado County. Founded in 1840, the early settlers were mainly from other Southern states. A flow of German and Czech immigrants began to arrive in the 1850’s.

At about the same time, the start of the Civil War drove southern plantation owners to Texas and a large plantation economy began to thrive.  Significant quantities of corn, tobacco, wool, and cotton began to  ship to outside markets.

Fayette County Today

During the last 30 years, the economic growth of Fayette County has been dependent on its natural resources. Industrial production of construction gravel and sand, grinding pebbles, clays, and fuller’s earth is active and oil, first discovered in 1943, is currently a major source of income and tax revenue. With new horizontal oil drilling techniques the County has experienced a dramatic rise in oil and gas production  since the 1990’s. The Giddings Oilfield is highly active and has produced 14 million barrels of oil and 72,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas.
The County’s largest employer is the Lower Colorado River Authority’s Fayette Power Project, with about 500 workers. Other employers include banking, service companies, retail, trucking, drilling and pipeline management, and local schools and government.
